This document summarizes the proceedings of the Deep-Sea Corals Workshop held in Galway, Ireland on January 16-17, 2003. The workshop was hosted by the Irish Marine Institute (MI) and organized by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). A group of deep-sea coral researchers met in Galway to discuss the need for an International Deep-Sea Corals Action Plan, identify critical information needs to increase our understanding of these unique and fragile habitats, and identify collaborative efforts to help meet those critical needs. Representatives from eight countries including Belgium, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States met discuss and formulate an International Deep-sea Coral Action Plan. Each of these countries has a vested interest in deep-sea coral research and management.

Deep reefs take tens of thousands of years to grow, and some tree corals can live for centuries. The majority of known coral species exist in the dark, cold waters of the deep sea. These corals, referred to as ‘deep-sea’ or ‘cold-water’ corals, form complex structures that provide shelter.

Summary, Deep-sea corals workshop: International Planning and Collaboration Workshop for the Gulf of Mexico and the North Atlantic Ocean, Galway, Ireland, JanuaryWhat Is Deep-Sea Coral Habitat.
While the conditions are extreme, the deep sea is home to an abundant variety of life. Summary corals, like their warm-water cousins, are actually colonies of small animals that build a common skeleton, which grows into many shapes and colors.
Not all corals are found on island coasts in shallow seas. In fact, over half of all known coral species are found in deep, dark waters where temperatures range from °C (°F).
For this reason, we call these corals the "cold-water" or "deep-sea" corals. They are found all over the world. Deep-Sea Coral Research and Technology Program Information Management Workshop July 20th & 21st,Silver Spring, Maryland – Workshop Summary Executive Summary: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) held an information management workshop for deep-sea corals in Silver Spring, Maryland, on July 20th and 21st, Deep sea reefs are sometimes referred to as "mounds," which Deep-Sea Corals Workshop book accurately describes the Deep-Sea Corals Workshop book calcium carbonate skeleton that is left behind as a reef grows and corals below die off, rather than the living habitat and refuge that deep sea corals provide for fish and invertebrates.
Mounds may or may not contain living deep sea reefs. Summary, Deep-sea corals workshop [microform]: International Planning and Collaboration Workshop for the Gulf of Mexico and the North Atlantic Ocean, Galway, Ireland, January[] McDonough, J.

Silver Spring, MD. Since NOAA published the State of Deep Coral Ecosystems of the United States report, many deep-sea coral research and management efforts have taken place.
This publication presents these exciting advances. Like the report, we have regional chapters describing the distribution and ecology of the deep-sea coral ecosystems, with a focus on new information since The conditions in the study locations may provide insight into deep-water corals surviving and growing in low CO2 saturation states.
PIPA Process and Outcomes.
